Minimal Access Surgeries

Minimal access surgeries are the surgeries that are performed by making tiny or small incisions in the body and inserting a thin tube with a camera attached to the other end into the body through the incision. The images/ video captured with the help of the camera are viewed on a monitor and they allow the surgeon to observe or treat the affected area with the help of thin surgical instruments. The incisions are then sutured after the procedure is performed. Since the incisions are small, the trauma to the body and the recovery time is minimal.

Minimal access procedures can be applied for the following -

  1. Laparoscopy – Laparoscopic surgeries are performed to treat disorders of the small & large intestine and hernias using the minimal access procedure of laparoscopy. This procedure enables diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions like Crohn’s disease, Colorectal cancers, Ulcerative Colitis, Inguinal Hernia etc. through a small incision made in the abdominal area.
  2. Endoscopy – Endoscopy is carried out to diagnose and treat the esophagus, stomach and duodenum by inserting a thin tube through the mouth down the throat.
  3. Colonoscopy – This procedure is used to diagnose conditions related to the small bowel by inserting a long tube with a camera attached through the anus. The images are viewed on a monitor outside the body. It can be used to confirm and treat conditions like Crohn’s disease, blockages or tumors in the intestine.
  4. Minimally Invasive Proctology – Minimally invasive proctology consists of procedures performed for anal and rectal diseases such as anal fissure, haemorrhoids and fistula in ano. They bring about speedy recovery and allow the patients to resume their usual routine comparatively quickly.
