Inguinal Hernia– What is it?

Inguinal hernia

Inguinal hernia is a type of hernia which may occur in both male and female adults when  intestine or omentum bulges out through a weak spot in the abdominal wall muscles making it protrude through the inguinal canal. Gradually this bulge starts growing larger and the hernia becomes incarcerated or irreducible and may progress to intestinal obstruction or strangulation. It is common knowledge that lack of exercise leads to weakened muscles and accumulating body fat in the  abdomen area can substantially weaken the abdominal muscles.

When the bulge does not reduce in size or in some cases continues growing larger, it tends to stretch a portion of the intestine along with the bulge, resulting in excruciating pain for the patient suffering from incarcerated hernia.

If the portion of intestine in the buldge gets kinked it leads to intestinal obstruction causing pain, vomiting and constipation.

Strangulated hernia is when intestines due to being stretched, experience shortage or loss of blood supply. This leads to  complications such as gangrene or perforation often associated with excruciating pain, if not treated immediately.

Symptoms & Causes of Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal Hernia may occur in a person due to any one reason or maybe the outcome of a combination of reasons and circumstances governing the affected individual’s life.  Any increase in intra abdominal pressure such as lifting of heavy weights, obesity, straining during passing urine or stools, chronic cough may lead to hernia formation.

However the chances of these habits leading to hernia may become profound due to lifestyle choices, like prolonged smoking and drinking.

Genetic inheritance can also be attributed for inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernia is definitely not a condition to be neglected as it is not only extremely painful but also accompanied by severe discomfort as a pronounced bulge, noticeable in the lower abdominal area. The pain usually lessens when lying down and increases on standing upright or bending.
