Hernia is that the resultant bulge that is commonly quite visible against the skin. The most frequent location for a hernia is the stomach area. The abdominal wall is a sheet of muscles and tendon that runs down from rib to legs. The most common function is that it holds the abdominal contents, primarily the intestine. If a weakness opens up in the wall the intestine is pushed through the opening.
This window of weakness usually happens wherever there's a natural weakness in out abdominal wall. The umbilical area is a prone area of natural weakness which is very frequent for a hernia.
Mostly the hernias do not cause pain. Paradoxically the larger one often hurt less, the reason being that a large window in the abdominal wall permits the intestine to slide without causing much pain. Pain tends to have been associated with something getting squeezed, which is often in the case with the smaller hernias. Both of them often requires being operated as soon as possible. If left such intestine untreated will strangulate and tend to cause the longest post-operative pain. So hernia has to be fixed as you know about it.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs use an instrument called the laparoscope. There are two or four small incisions made in the abdominal wall through which a laparoscope is passed which is a thing telescope with light at the end. Also, the surgical instruments are passed through it. The incision is small so the whole technique is often called Keyhole surgery, which is different than the conventional Open surgery. Such Laparoscopic hernia surgery is also widely called minimally invasive surgery Hernia surgery.
